Fredonia, New York - December 2007

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House

The only year-round performing arts center in the Northern Chautauqua county region and a recipient of the New York State Historic Preservation Award.

Dunkirk
The docks on Lake Erie. Dunkirk borders Fredonia. I always do last-minute Christmas shopping in Dunkirk.
17 Central Avenue, Fredonia
The Martinson's moved to Fredonia when John was a high school junior. This is where they lived. Read the history of the house and about the improvements John's dad, Art, made while they lived there. http://www.co.chautauqua.ny.us/hist/hist_struc/Pomfret/17CentralAvenueFredoniaHistory.pdf
First Gas Well in the United States
In 1821, William Hart dug the first successful gas well in what is now the Village of Fredonia. By 1825, it supplied enough natural gas for lights in two stores, two shops and a grist mill. Expanding on Hart's work, the Fredonia Gas Light Company was formed in 1858, becoming the first American natural gas company. The site is marked by a stone monument in downtown Fredonia. (Wikipedia)

Cassadaga, New York
Estimated population in 2003 was 659. It was once a lumber town and now has a nice population of summer cottages and vacation sites. The town get very busy for the summer season.

Cassadaga Lake

Lilly Dale Since its establishment in 1879, Lily Dale has been the world's largest center for spiritual development and the practice of the Spiritualist religion. It's right down the road from Cassadaga. http://www.lilydaleassembly.com/

Grange Hall
In the mid 19th century Fredonia became the home of the first dues-paying Grange. The United States' first Grange Hall was erected in Fredonia during the late 1860s (the Fredonia Grange was established on April 16, 1868), and the original building (Grange Hall #1) still stands on Main Street.
